The Hidden Holocaust: Our Civilizational Crisis by Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed at Imperial College London

November 20, 2007 No Comment

In this landmark seminar at the Imperial College London in November 2007, Dr. Nafeez Ahmed introduces for the first time the preliminary findings of the IPRD’s interdisciplinary research project into global systemic crises, as articulated in his 2010 monograph, A User’s Guide to the Crisis of Civilization (Pluto/Palgrave Macmillan). Dr. Ahmed integrates analysis of climate change, energy depletion, food insecurity, economic crisis and the danger of violent and even genocidal conflict, while also exploring the prospects for positive social change. This seminar is notable for Dr. Ahmed’s prescient warning of an imminent 2008 global banking crisis to be triggered by the collapse of the housing markets. Excerpt:

“… But the ‘hidden holocaust’ is not an aberration from our advanced civilization that represents the peak of human development, requiring only some reforms. Rather, the ‘hidden holocaust’ is integral to the very structure, values and activities of our civilization. It is part and parcel of the ‘global values’ of the international political and economic order that underpins industrial civilization. And unless we attempt to transform the nature of our civilization, we will all perish in a holocaust of our own making.”
