Dr. Daniele Ganser

Daniele Ganser is a Swiss historian who specializes in inter-national relations and international history from 1945 to today. His research interests are peace research, geostrategy, secret warfare, resource wars, globalization and human rights. He teaches at Swiss universities, including the history department of Basel University. His current research is focusing on the so called “war on terror” and peak oil (

Daniele Ganser was born in 1972 in Lugano in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland and grew up in Basel in the German speaking part of Switzerland. From 1992 he studied Ancient and Modern History, Philosophy, English Literature and International Relations at Basel University in Switzerland, Amsterdam University (UVA) in the Netherlands and at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in England. He obtained his Master in history in 1998 summa cum laude and his PhD in history in 2001 insigni cum laude. He speaks German, Italian, Englisch, French and Spanish.

From 2001 to 2003 Daniele Ganser was a Senior Researcher with the Think Tank Avenir Suisse in Zurich. He was responsible for international relations and among other things directed the campaign of the Think Tank which influenced the national vote that lead to Switzerland becoming a full member of the United Nations Organisation (UNO) in 2003. Avenir Suisse is funded by the 14 largest international companies of Switzerland, including Swiss Re, ABB, Novartis, Roche, UBS, Credit Suisse and Nestlé and has the general task to prepare Switzerland and its economy for the challenges of the future.

From 2003 to 2006 Daniele Ganser was a Senior Researcher at the Center for Security Studies at the Swiss Federal Institue of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. In cooperation with the Swiss Foreign Ministry – the Federal Departement of Foreign Affairs (DFA) – he investigated the impact of globalization on war and peace and researched how Swiss and international companies support and profit from war, or alternatively, promote peace through corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Daniele Ganser has researched at the Military Academy (MILAK) of the Swiss Federal Institue of Technology (ETH). He has been invited several times by the Swiss parliament and Swiss national television to offer his expertise on matters of foreign and security policy. His books, scientific papers, newspaper articles and interviews appeared in several different countries and languages.
